It was really interesting music, but from everything on that album, we took “Me and Your Mama,” and that was kind of the seed. So we had this other album done, and we listened to it back and forth a couple of times and decided to change the path. We made an album that was just really strange. Basically, just experimenting with everything we had. What you can hear is years of people knowing each other and playing together, and I think you can really hear that in the recording.Īfter we went into the studio with the band, Donald and I went back to our home studio with all the material, sat down and took all these experimental jam sessions and created an album - 12 tracks - of really experimental, weird stuff. We got the band together for two weeks and just kind of jammed out. That was what was the beginning of this album. Every tour stop, we jam out together, play songs and explore different ideas. So any time we have soundcheck or a little time, we jam out.
It’s interesting, because the band is a big part of our live show and has been from the very first tour we had with Childish Gambino. What made you and Donald decide to change lanes for this project? Awaken, My Love! is quite the departure from his other work. You’ve helped produce and write all of Childish Gambino’s albums thus far. Any time you have the chance to celebrate something with your closest best friends, it’s very special. It was nothing we ever thought about while making the album, but I think it’s especially fun since Childish Gambino and the band - these are people I’ve been working with for eight years now. I woke up to a bunch of missed calls and was like, “Oh, it came out today.” It’s kind of crazy, because I’ve been kind of living under a rock this last year, working on Black Panther, so I knew the Grammy nominations were coming up, but I didn’t know it was going to be that morning. How did you react when you heard the news? You’re nominated for three Grammys this year for your work with Childish Gambino, including record of the year and album of the year. My favorite song in the album is “Me and Your Mama.” The starting beat gives me slight chills and seems like it should be placed in a movie where the main protagonist and antagonist meet.

His approach has a more casual and freestyle sound but always ends up with clean flowing lyrics full of emotion. Gambino’s raps are characteristically his, and has a style that can attempt to be mimicked but won’t ever be copied. The album has no features and is a total genre change for Gambino, but it couldn’t have been done better.Įven though the album is done beautifully, as a fan it’s upsetting not to have another rap album.
After the pre-releases of two songs, “Redbone” and “Me and Your Mama,” the album was released on December 2nd followed by 9 other tracks. This album strays from the rap path and has aspects of R&B, soul, and funk. Gambino usually has beats with strong rhythm and bass, with witty yet meaningful lyrics. This album is unlike anything ever released by him. This is Gambino’s 3rd studio album following “The Camp” and “Because of the Internet,” on top of multiple mixtapes and singles also released. The concert was a listening party for his new album, “Awaken, My Love!” It was a phone-free event, but that didn’t stop people from talking about the event on social media, which created a massive hype for the album. The concert was prompted by an app, Pharos. show “Atlanta.” The first weekend of September, Glover, also know as Childish Gambino, hosted a concert at Joshua Tree California. Donald Glover is a rapper and actor staring in the new T.V.
