If they are all set to the same channel, then all of the parts will be triggered at once when a note is played. Each part can be set to one of four MIDI channels. To the right of the On/Off button is the MIDI channel setting. I will cover those controls in more detail later. Clicking on the label for a part (“A” for instance) will let you get at the “Smart Knobs” for that particular part. To turn a certain part on or off, there is a button for that on the left side. One preset can work for many situations, but you can also layer them on top of one another. There are four parts available, and each one can have a separate preset loaded in to it. This is where you can load in presets, add effects, and more. They also recommend having at least 2 gigabytes of RAM.Īfter you load it into your DAW, you’re greeted with the main display of Xpand!2. The installation of Xpand!2 is simple as it uses a serial number for copy protection, but it does install PACE drivers as well. The four parts can either be triggered separately, or any number of them can be set to the same MIDI channel.

Each patch can also have different settings that affect the presets that are loaded in to it. There are over 1,200 presets you can load into any of the four parts, and there are a total of over 2,500 patches waiting to be used in your next production.Ī patch can use up to four presets at once. Xpand!2 has a very large number of presets, and you’re able to easily manipulate the sounds. Some people are just not into preset design, and really love presets that are ready to go.

What it does do is let you get to work quickly and work without a lot of complication getting in the way. Unlike Hybrid 3, this isn’t a synthesizer plugin in which you have a multitude of controls, giving you access to some complex sound design. What is Xpand!2 all about? In a nutshell, it is a four-part multitimbral workstation. Just recently, AIR decided to release it as a plugin that can be run in your DAW of choice. The original Xpand! was previously only available for Pro Tools users. In this issue, I will covering another product of theirs called Xpand!2. In our last issue of SoundBytes, I reviewed AIR Music’s Hybrid 3. This has since been superseded by the excellent splitter plug-in which comes as part of the Avid Multiband Compressor.SoundBytes continues its coverage of AIR virtual instruments with a look at Xpand!2, a four-part multitimbral workstation with a straightforward user interface that gets you up and running in no time. Strangely Kill EQ doesn't null properly whereas the filters in 1 band EQ do. I've used the steep filters in Kill EQ for multiband processing experiments when the 24dB/Oct filters in 1 band EQ weren't steep enough. Second honourable mention goes to Kill EQ. It's nice and dramatic and because of the interdependence of the cutoff with the audio (and with the resonance) it's something which is much better written in real time rather than drawn (why do so many people want to draw their automation?). Vintage Filter has been a friend in my teaching as its been the plug-in I use to introduce plug-in automation to beginners.

I've got a couple of honourable mentions. Run the plug-in in bypass for stereo and un-bypass to check mono compatibility. Probably the best "facepalm" moment I've had on the blog was when Russ featured a tip on using the AIR stereo width plug-in as a mono button on the master.
